Apo Maria “Whang-Od” Oggay, the oldest mambabatok or conventional Kalinga tattoo artist within the Philippines, is the brand new cowl star of a style journal.
She is featured within the April 2023 problem of Vogue Philippines, which highlights how she “symbolizes the power and great thing about the Filipino spirit.”
Heralded because the final mambabatok of her era, she has imprinted the symbols of the Kalinga tribe, signifying power, bravery and sweetness, on the pores and skin of hundreds of people that have made the pilgrimage to Buscalan,” stated a publish on the Instagram web page of the journal.
Whang-Od, who turned 106 final February, obtained the Dangal ng Haraya Award for Intangible Cultural Heritage.
He obtained the award in 2018.
