Appian Means bids for UNESCO standing – Way of life

(ANSA) – ROME, JANUARY 10 – The traditional Roman Appian Means that connects Rome with Brindisi in Puglia submitted a suggestion on Tuesday to be a part of UNESCO’s cultural heritage listing.

The memorandum of understanding for the candidacy was signed by representatives of 4 areas – Lazio, Campania, Basilicata and Puglia – 12 provinces and metropolitan cities, 73 different cities, 15 parks, the Pontifical Fee for Sacred Archeology and 25 Italian and international universities.

The nomination ceremony for ‘Through Appia, Regina Viarium’ (The Appian Means, Queen of the Methods) befell on the Baths of Diocletian in Rome.

For the primary time, the Italian Ministry of Tradition instantly promotes a UNESCO candidacy.

The Appian Means, a wonderful prototype of Roamn’s freeway system, “was far more than a navy or industrial freeway,” stated Undersecretary for Tradition Gianmarco Mazzi.

“The Appian Means was above all a path of tradition for the Roman world. And it’s exactly on this cultural side the place we consider that the component that UNESCO’s candidacies require is discovered”. (ANSA).
