Fluffy calves with wings and a knack for pollination, bunnies on a picnic and a cow having fun with a meal of grass on the desk are among the cute creatures that populate the illustrations of Maria Jesús Contreras. The Chilean artist imagines fantastical worlds of play and whimsy, inhabited by characters who specific sturdy feelings. Saturated with shiny colours, her illustrations are stuffed with texture and grainy particulars that give the scenes a retro really feel.
Contreras works between analog and digital mediums, and her course of usually begins on paper. “In Chile we’ve many stray canines and cats and avenue distributors. I wish to take a pocket book and write life (into) my characters,” she says, noting that she usually references the surreal qualities of her goals in her performs. “The remainder of the method is simply drawing, maintaining a colour palette and dealing with texture, however more often than not it is the concept takes probably the most time.”
