In Huddersfield, England, half an hour’s drive from Yorkshire Sculpture Park, artist Yukihiro Akama creates a whimsical world in miniature from a furnishings maker’s workshop. In his upcoming solo exhibition at YSP – his largest to this point – the artist presents 55 wood homes intricately carved in Basho no Kankaku — A Sense of Place.
Akama, who pursued a profession in structure whereas dwelling in Japan, usually relied on digital instruments and felt disconnected from conventional strategies of constructing and dealing together with his fingers. After transferring to the UK in 2011, he started sculpting small homes that reminded him of vernacular types, similar to stilt homes, that he would see on his travels by way of Asia. Inspiration additionally comes from Japanese temples and shrines, significantly components from four,000-year-old ruins courting again to the Jōmon period.
