Bluebirds are sometimes related to happiness, love, hope and positivity, making them a becoming topic for New York artist Gigi Chen (above), whose surreal wildlife work mix the animal kingdom with symbols of house, consolation and connection.
In her upcoming solo exhibition A collective glow at Melbourne's Beinart Gallery, Chen continues to discover the emotional connections between animals and the surroundings. In “A Sparrow's Music,” a fowl's physique radiates with neon pink hearts, whereas in “A Collective Glow,” half a dozen sparrows sew a glowing cavity in a pigeon's chest.
Chen's latest sequence considers the connection between nature and mythology alongside autobiographical narratives of the complexity of household, security, love and belonging. Her work incorporates otherworldly, dream-like imagery that pulls on childhood associations with magical animal films and tv. “The work prominently characteristic creatures — often birds — that act as conduits for Chen and her personal tales,” a gallery assertion says.
A collective glow takes place between June 23 and July 17. Discover extra on Chen's web site and Instagram.
