Family Memories and Midwestern Niceties Converge in Melissa Joseph’s ‘Casserole Culture’
Melissa Joseph’s upcoming solo exhibition, Casserole Culture, showcases her artistic practice influenced by her Midwestern upbringing in Saint Marys, Pennsylvania. Born to a mother of Irish descent and a father from Kerala, India, Joseph’s work reflects the blend of her biracial life and the warmth of Midwestern community.
The exhibition will feature soft needle-felted scenes that capture the essence of family memories, including everyday objects like an upturned hat and the vibrancy of dining room wallpaper. Joseph incorporates found materials in her sculptural pieces, such as a felted fire inside a model hearth.
Following the death of her mother in 2024, Joseph has shifted her focus to depicting the belongings and spaces that held cherished moments. “Even if the people themselves may elude the artist’s hand, she captures the spaces they enliven,” a statement about the exhibition notes. Casserole Culture will be on display from September 9 to October 17 at Charles Moffett in New York.
