Rodrigo Oñate, aka Roco, fuses the visible languages of graffiti, comics and popular culture into his energetic work. Splitting his time between Chicago and Querétaro, Mexico, the artist works on partitions and canvases, mixing a variety of characters along with easy patterns, smiles and the occasional surreal element, like a gloved hand with an eye fixed.
Roco describes his course of as utterly intuitive and nearly like writing graffiti. “I throw in some strains from there too. I begin staging characters and parts by including intricate textures and shapes,” he says. “I like motion and fluid shapes, (and am) all the time searching for a great stability of colour and texture within the composition.”
A number of cartoon characters return all through the witty works and infrequently come up from private connections. The birds, for instance, come from Roco's mom telling him that the animals flocking to their household's backyard have been ancestors visiting from one other realm, whereas the canines mimic his three canines.
Different creatures have broader symbolism, comparable to jaguars and massive cats that recall the spirit guides of Mexican mythology. And primates? They’re included as a result of they create a way of playfulness and pleasure, the 2 emotions the artist hopes to convey with every work.
