Ken Kelleher’s Colorful Characters Take Over a Botanical Garden
The Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) in Burlington, Ontario, hosted its annual Concert in the Garden featuring Grammy-nominated Colombian Canadian singer-songwriter Lido Pimienta, accompanied by the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. The rain subsided just in time for the event, which coincided with the exhibition of Ken Kelleher’s Anchorball: A Curious Art Journey.
RBG, established in 1941 and encompassing over 2,400 acres, aims to broaden its audience through art and cultural experiences. Zahra Noorani, RBG’s director of business development, noted the institution’s intent to create a welcoming space for diverse visitors.
Anchorball, curated by Jeremy Freiburger, features 18 monumental sculptures by Kelleher, some reaching 12 feet high, integrated with augmented reality experiences. The exhibition encourages visitors to explore the gardens in a new way, with characters ranging from whimsical creatures to minimalist floral forms.
Noorani described the exhibition as a valuable learning experience for RBG, fostering collaboration and confidence in undertaking ambitious cultural projects.
