Heat-Fused Textile Waste Becomes a New Architectural Material

Fast Fashion Architecture is a material research project developed by London-based designer Taylor Leung of 12103 Design Studio in collaboration with Chung Yin Jeffrey Kwong, Chao-An Chang, Chong Li, and Jiali Yan at The Bartlett School of Architecture in 2022. This project explores transforming discarded synthetic textiles into construction materials for furniture and architectural spaces.

The initiative focuses on the relationship between fashion and architecture, seeking to repurpose non-biodegradable synthetic garments and factory waste into a new material system. The textiles, primarily woven polyester fibers, are fused together using heat without adhesives, creating porous units that maintain the original colors and textures.

A modified 3D printer, described as a form of ‘digital soldering’, controls the heat-fusion process. This system enables the team to adjust the bonding pattern based on temperature and density, resulting in material units that reflect the unique characteristics of the original garments.

The project has led to the development of various prototypes, including an outdoor wall and furniture pieces, culminating in a shelter prototype at Grymsdyke Farm. Fast Fashion Architecture proposes a model for circulating material between industries, transforming textile waste into architectural applications.
