Mexico Initiates Legal Action Against Google Over Gulf Name Controversy

In a bold move, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has launched a lawsuit against Google for its recent renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America" for users in the United States. This decision, which follows an order from former President Trump, has sparked significant backlash.

During a press briefing, Sheinbaum reiterated that the decree from the U.S. government only applies to its jurisdiction and does not extend to international waters. She emphasized, "the only thing we want is compliance with the decree issued by the United States government," highlighting that Mexico's territorial waters should retain their original name.

Prior to the lawsuit, Mexican officials reached out to Google, urging the tech giant to revert the name change, but received a response from Google’s VP Cris Turner indicating no plans to alter the designation. As the legal dispute unfolds, it comes on the heels of a recent bill passed by the U.S. House to formalize the name change.

Google’s decision to comply with the Trump administration's wishes was among the earliest, prompting other tech companies to follow suit, but not MapQuest, which continues to use the Gulf of Mexico designation.
