Ten is a decision.

Everywhere else the feed runs forever and calls it abundance. But a river with no banks is not a river, it is a flood — you can scroll one all afternoon and come away with nothing you could repeat to somebody at dinner. Infinite is not generous. Infinite is just the absence of anyone willing to choose.

So we picked a number, and we let the number do the editing.

Ten sections. Wide enough to hold a whole day, few enough to keep in your head at once. These, and no others:

Ten stories. The Top 10 down the side of every page is one from each of those ten sections: the newest thing in Sports, the newest thing in Food, and so on down the list, most recent first. Ten sections, ten stories, and no section ever crowds out another — when a section publishes again, its older entry steps down without ceremony. Nothing accumulates. Nothing sits there waiting for you to catch up. There is no unread count on this site and there never will be, because a number that only ever goes up is not information, it is a debt.

Everything is credited. We do not pretend the reporting is ours. Every story here ends with a link to the newsroom that actually did the work — the wire, the paper, the magazine, the beat writer who made the phone calls. Follow it. That link is the point, not a formality.

And it should be quick. The pages are plain HTML. They arrive whole, they arrive on a bad connection, and they do not rearrange themselves under your thumb while you are trying to read.

That is the whole idea. Ten sections, ten stories, and then go do something else with your afternoon.
