A Long-Awaited Journey: Dave Franco and Nicholas Braun Discuss 'Idiots' After Eight Years

The road to bringing the film ‘Idiots’ to life has been a lengthy one for stars Dave Franco and Nicholas Braun, who, alongside director Macon Blair, finally premiered the movie at the Sundance Film Festival.
Originally titled ‘The Shitheads,’ the film captures a chaotic road trip comedy featuring slackers tasked with transporting a teenager to rehab. The unique premise stems from a conversation Blair had with producer Alex Orr about unregulated teenage transport services, which inspired the film’s story. “That’s delicious,” Blair recalled, expressing his excitement over the concept.
Despite the intriguing premise, the film's journey to production faced numerous hurdles, spanning over a decade. Blair revealed, “We’ve been trying to make it for a long time.” The project almost materialized in 2017 but fell through, prompting a lengthy hiatus. However, Blair noted that the time away ultimately benefited the film, allowing it to develop into the vision he had always intended.
Franco, who has been attached to the film since its inception, was quick to rejoin the project when it was revived. “He had read the script a couple years before and was really excited about it,” Blair shared. Franco’s enthusiasm was pivotal in reinvigorating interest, as he not only signed on but also contributed valuable casting suggestions, including names like O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Mason Thames.
For Braun, the opportunity to be part of ‘Idiots’ was equally thrilling. He had auditioned for the film years prior but believed his rising fame from ‘Succession’ might have closed the door on his involvement. Upon hearing the film was back on track, he said, “I was like, ‘Oh, Shitheads is back! Amazing!’” He later shared that filming significant scenes gave him closure on the project he had been contemplating for eight years.
With its intriguing premise and dedicated cast, ‘Idiots’ promises to be a memorable addition to the Sundance lineup.
