A Tribute to Charles Hollis Jones, the 'King of Lucite'

Charles Hollis Jones, celebrated as the 'King of Lucite', passed away last week at the age of 81. A pioneer in the use of acrylic furniture, Jones became a defining figure in the luxurious interiors of 1970s Hollywood.

Born in Indiana, Jones moved to Los Angeles at just 16, where he founded his brand, CHJ. His innovative approach to Lucite, a form of acrylic, led him to create bespoke furniture that caught the eye of numerous celebrities, including Frank Sinatra and Diana Ross. 'Lucite was not my first choice. I really loved glass, but it could not do what I wanted it to do,' Jones once remarked, reflecting on his material journey.

Jones's collaborations with notable interior designers and architects, including John Lautner, resulted in many iconic projects, such as the legendary residence of Arthur Elrod in Palm Springs. His designs, like the Edison Lamp and the Wisteria chair, exemplified his ability to blend functionality with artistic vision.

Despite a decline in recognition during the 1980s, Jones's work saw a resurgence in the early 2000s, becoming highly sought after in the vintage market. His unique creations, characterized by their transparency and sculptural elegance, have solidified his legacy as a key player in the 20th-century American studio furniture movement.
