Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Outlines Ambitious Future During Annual Meeting

By Editor • August 18, 2026 • 1 min read

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences convened its annual meeting on Tuesday, charting a dynamic course for the future with its approximately 11,000 members. Led by Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor and CEO Bill Kramer, the hour-long virtual gathering focused on the Academy's $187 million budget for 2027 and its strategies for engaging with new technologies like AI.

The budget for July 2026 to June 2027 allocates 23% to awards-related expenses, while 41% is earmarked for personnel across programs. Kramer emphasized the importance of diversifying revenue streams, noting that only 10% of operating revenues were previously linked to the Academy Awards. The Academy 100 Revenue Diversification Campaign has already raised $308 million towards a $500 million goal, with notable contributions from major players like Netflix and Chanel.

Looking ahead, the Oscars will transition from ABC to YouTube in 2029, with hopes of reaching an audience of 2 billion viewers globally. The ceremony will also move to the larger Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, accommodating 7,000 attendees compared to the Dolby Theatre's 3,400. This change aims to enhance accessibility for Academy members.

On the topic of AI, Howell reassured members of the Academy's commitment to actively engage in discussions surrounding its impact on the industry. She emphasized that technology should serve creativity, not replace it, and that the Academy is a platform for artists and technologists to collaborate on shaping the future of filmmaking.

Amy Homma, director of the Academy Museum, highlighted recent acquisitions, including significant props from films like "Nomadland" and "Pee-wee’s Big Adventure." Additionally, the Academy Film Archive, also known as the Pickford Center, will undergo renovations, ensuring the preservation and enhancement of its facilities.
