Adelaide Bus Crash Leaves Driver and Passenger Trapped

In a harrowing incident on Commercial Road in Port Adelaide, a bus collided with a concrete rail bridge pylon, resulting in significant injuries to both the driver and a passenger. The crash occurred shortly before 9 AM, prompting immediate response from police and emergency services.

The 37-year-old driver from Kensington Park was critically injured and required extensive treatment, including blood transfusions, before being transported to the Royal Adelaide Hospital. His condition is serious but stable. The 28-year-old female passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to a hospital.

Rescue efforts led by the Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) involved 19 firefighters and took over an hour to free the driver, who was trapped by his lower limbs. MFS commander Simon Kirkmoe described the removal as complex, requiring specialized techniques to drag the bus off the pylon and utilize hydraulic tools to extricate the driver and the passenger.

While four other passengers managed to exit the bus unassisted, the severity of the damage to the vehicle was notable. A structural engineer will inspect the rail bridge to ensure its integrity before train services can resume. Meanwhile, traffic restrictions remain in place around the accident scene as investigations continue.
