Apple Launches $899 Mac Mini with M6 Chip, Ignoring M5 Lineage

Apple has unveiled its latest Mac mini, priced at $899, featuring the new M6 chip, while the higher-end model retains the M5 Pro. Set to ship on September 22 across 30 countries, this release marks a significant shift, skipping the anticipated M5 entirely.

The base model boasts Apple's first 2nm chip, the M6, which integrates 12 CPU cores and 12 GPU cores, alongside a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. In contrast, the $1,699 version is powered by the M5 Pro, offering enhanced performance with up to 18 CPU cores and 20 GPU cores, designed for demanding tasks and capable of clustering multiple minis to manage large AI models.

While the M6 represents a leap in technology, the price of the entry-level Mac mini has risen by $300 since 2024, reflecting increased component costs driven by the AI data center demand. Apple's pricing strategy has shifted, with the M4 Mac mini costing $600 in late 2024, before recent hikes pushed the effective entry price to $799.

Despite the advancements, the decision to skip the M5 in the new models raises questions about Apple's commitment to clarity in its product lineup. Historically, consumers have relied on chip numbers as indicators of performance, but this release blurs those lines. The M6's architecture is geared for efficiency, while the M5 Pro’s wider scaling focuses on multi-core performance, leaving potential buyers confused about which model to choose.

Additionally, the new model features three Thunderbolt 4 ports, while the M5 Pro offers Thunderbolt 5, underscoring a segmentation strategy rather than one based on technical capabilities. Both models include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and optional 10Gb Ethernet, with USB-C ports maintaining standard speeds.
