Art Meets Humanity in Julie Green's 'The Last Supper'

By Editor • August 18, 2026 • 1 min read

Julie L. Green's poignant art series, The Last Supper, explores the final meal requests of death row inmates, reflecting on their humanity amid a grim reality. Each ceramic plate presents a unique story, highlighting the complexity of choices made in dire circumstances.

Spanning from 1999 to 2001, Green transformed mass-produced dinnerware with cobalt blue paint to depict meals ranging from birthday cakes to iconic dishes like KFC and shrimp. Inspired by a newspaper article detailing one inmate's lavish last meal, Green sought to uncover the narratives behind these culinary choices.

As Green noted, these meal requests reveal insights into the individuals’ backgrounds, offering a glimpse into their lives before execution. Among the notable requests are those from infamous figures like Timothy McVeigh and John Wayne Gacy, whose meals have become part of public lore.

This autumn, The Last Supper will be showcased at the Grand Rapids Art Museum, running from October 3 for over a year, inviting viewers to contemplate the intersection of life, death, and the final acts of humanity.
