Brussels Unveils Floral Tribute to 160 Years of Belgium-Japan Friendship

Brussels is set to transform its Grand-Place into a breathtaking floral display, celebrating 160 years of diplomatic ties between Belgium and Japan. From August 13 to 16, 2026, the Flower Carpet event will feature 'Neo Hokusai,' a stunning floral interpretation of Hokusai's iconic artwork 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa.'

Designed by Japanese artist Hiro Sugiyama, this year's installation combines contemporary graphic elements with traditional floral artistry, using over 750,000 dahlias across nearly 1,300 square meters. This marks Japan's return as a guest of honor at the event, a decade after its last participation.

The carpet will showcase intricate Japanese motifs, including an ichimatsu checkerboard symbolizing prosperity and patterns inspired by kumiko ranma woodwork. Notably, this year's event extends beyond the Grand-Place, with a companion installation at the Brussels Stock Exchange celebrating Belgium's brewing heritage through floral designs featuring hops.

Evenings will be enhanced with a captivating sound and light show, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the experience. As the floral masterpiece flourishes for just four days, it serves as a vibrant reminder of the enduring cultural exchange between Japan and Belgium.
