Brussels to Celebrate 160 Years of Belgium-Japan Relations with a Stunning Flower Carpet

Brussels is set to transform its iconic Grand-Place into a breathtaking floral representation of Hokusai’s legendary wave, as the 2026 Flower Carpet takes center stage from August 13 to 16. This year’s event, marking the 160th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Belgium and Japan, showcases a modern adaptation titled Neo Hokusai, designed by Japanese artist Hiro Sugiyama.

The intricate installation features over 750,000 dahlias, covering nearly 1,300 square meters. This vibrant display weaves together traditional Japanese motifs, including an ichimatsu checkerboard symbolizing continuity and prosperity, alongside patterns inspired by kumiko ranma woodwork. These elements frame the design, while the corners proudly display Brussels’ coat of arms.

Unlike previous editions, this year includes a second floral installation at the Brussels Stock Exchange, extending the celebration through the city and featuring hops as its theme, paying homage to Belgium’s brewing heritage.

Visitors can enjoy both floral masterpieces daily, accompanied by enchanting sound and light shows at the Grand-Place each evening, creating a magical atmosphere. While the spectacular carpets are destined to vanish after just four days, their cultural significance and artistic brilliance promise to leave a lasting impression on all who attend.
