Buffalo Wild Wings Revives Nostalgia with Y2K Throwback Menu

Buffalo Wild Wings is giving diners a taste of nostalgia with its new Y2K throwback menu, launched on August 19. The fast-casual chain has tapped into early 2000s cravings, bringing back a selection of dishes that harken back to a time dominated by flip phones and frosted hairstyles. The menu features a mix of old-school favorites, including Beef on Weck Sliders, Buffalo Chips, Garlic Mushrooms, Mini Corn Dogs, and even the nostalgic Buffalo Zoo Cocktail, which can only be ordered in-store.
As a nod to the era, Buffalo Wild Wings has also partnered with Von Dutch for a capsule collection of apparel, including T-shirts and trucker hats, perfectly encapsulating the throwback vibe. With the resurgence of these classic items, the chain is not only reconnecting with its roots but also appealing to a customer base eager for a taste of the past.
During a recent visit to a Buffalo Wild Wings in Columbus, Ohio, the birthplace of the chain, the author tried the Throwback Ultimate Sampler, which included a selection of the menu’s offerings for $16.99. The meal was complemented by a six-count order of boneless wings coated in Hot BBQ sauce for an additional $9.99. The Buffalo Zoo Cocktail rounded out the experience at $9.49, setting the stage for a flavorful trip down memory lane.
The Beef on Weck Sliders, traditionally served on a kummelweck roll, were a highlight. Although the sliders came on Kaiser rolls instead, they still delivered good flavor, especially with a kick from the horseradish aioli. However, the sandwich could have benefited from more shaved sirloin, as it felt a bit bready. Meanwhile, the au jus on the side, while essentially beef broth, added a comforting touch to the dish.
The Garlic Mushrooms, however, didn’t quite hit the mark. Despite the anticipation, they lacked the garlicky punch expected and didn’t achieve the crispy texture one would hope for. The dish felt bland, and the accompanying sauces didn’t elevate them as much as desired.
On a brighter note, the Mini Corn Dogs received high praise. Their cornmeal batter and juicy frankfurter created a delightful snack reminiscent of county fair fare. Dipped in honey mustard, they were a hit, proving to be a standout item on the sampler platter.
The Buffalo Chips, another nostalgic offering, didn’t quite live up to the memories. They were lacking in seasoning and could have benefitted from a sharper cheddar jack cheese topping. Instead, what was promised as sea-salted and peppered chips turned out to be merely potato slices that required additional dips for flavor.
Finally, the Hot BBQ sauce, which had been absent from the menu since 2020, was surprisingly delightful. Slathered over the boneless wings, it provided a sweet and spicy flavor that might just convert mild sauce enthusiasts.
Overall, the Y2K throwback menu at Buffalo Wild Wings offers a mixed bag of nostalgia. While some items hit the mark and brought back fond memories, others fell short. For those wanting to relive the early 2000s with a plate of familiar flavors, this limited-time menu is worth a visit.
