Byunggwon Na's ALIT Lamp: A Harmonious Blend of Ceramic and Wood

Seoul designer Byunggwon Na redefines lighting with his innovative ALIT lamp, skillfully combining ceramic and wood in a minimalist form. The lamp features a soft, curved ceramic shade resting on a square wooden base, creating a striking visual dialogue between the two materials.

The ceramic shade, crafted through slip casting, begins as a circular form folded into four quadrants. This design results in gently curved surfaces that reflect both geometric precision and organic fluidity, evoking imagery of a seed or petal gently descending before settling.

One of the lamp's standout features is its versatility; the ceramic shade can be easily removed and replaced, allowing users to customize the ALIT’s look. When detached, the shade can function independently as a decorative object or tray, enhancing its practicality.

Na also experiments with color by incorporating pigments directly into the ceramic, resulting in shades that glow differently based on their hue. Lighter shades allow light to pass through, while pigmented versions diffuse a softer light, interacting beautifully with the wooden base. This thoughtful approach to design ensures that light is not merely a function but an integral part of the aesthetic composition.
