Cambodia's Scam Operations: Government Claims Success Amid Doubts

By Editor • August 28, 2026 • 1 min read

Cambodia has declared an end to the scam compounds that have plagued the nation, but skepticism surrounds this assertion. Senior Minister Chhay Sinarith announced to a group of 50 diplomats that the country has successfully eradicated large-scale online scams.

Despite the government's claims, rights organizations and experts have raised doubts about the veracity of this statement. Amnesty International's Montse Ferrer expressed concern, stating that the true measure of success lies in holding perpetrators accountable, not merely in shutting down compounds.

Criminal activities have reportedly shifted to more decentralized locations, complicating the fight against cybercrime. The Cambodian authorities, however, assert that they will continue to target these new hideouts. Between July 2025 and August 20, 2026, police investigated 793 locations, raiding 624 sites and detaining nearly 30,000 individuals linked to scams.
