Cape Town's Ambitious Campaign Aims to Sterilize 1,500 Pets This September

Cape Town is launching a significant campaign this September to sterilize 1,500 pets across several communities in Subcouncil 11, part of the ongoing Mass Animal Sterilisation Project (MASP). Since its inception in 2013, MASP has successfully sterilized over 19,000 dogs and cats, with nearly R9 million allocated to the initiative thus far.

The City of Cape Town has earmarked R850,000 for this year's campaign, targeting neighborhoods including Manenberg, Hanover Park, Athlone, and Heideveld. This effort is coordinated by the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, representing the Cape Animal Welfare Forum (CAWF), and will involve seven animal welfare organizations working together to achieve the sterilization goal.

City Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham, highlighted the initiative's vital role in promoting responsible pet ownership and improving animal health. She encouraged residents to engage with the program for the betterment of their pets and their communities.

Higham emphasized that sterilization is not just about controlling stray populations but also about enhancing the well-being of pets and reducing aggression and roaming behaviors. The campaign builds on previous efforts that have already reached areas like Dunoon and Khayelitsha, where recent initiatives have made a notable impact.

CAWF Chairperson Karen de Klerk praised the renewed funding, reiterating the importance of addressing the root causes of unwanted animal populations. Cape of Good Hope SPCA CEO Mqabuko Moyo Ndukwana echoed this sentiment, describing sterilization as a crucial preventive measure that helps alleviate the burden on shelters and animal welfare services.
