Challenges Ahead for US Sanctions on Iran Amid Global Resistance

By Editor • August 31, 2026 • 2 min read

In a significant pushback against US sanctions on Iran, both Pakistan and China have recently declared their intent to continue trading with the Iranian government. This development follows the sanctions imposed under 'Operation Economic Outcast,' which US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent touted as the "toughest sanctions in history" during an announcement on August 24.

President Donald Trump has echoed similar sentiments, branding the sanctions as "ECONOMIC D-DAY" and warning of severe consequences for any country aiding Iran. However, experts argue that the US's strategy to economically isolate Tehran is fraught with complications and unlikely to achieve its intended goals.

Historically, economic sanctions have rarely succeeded in toppling determined governments. Instead, they often exacerbate the suffering of ordinary citizens while consolidating power among regime loyalists. The effectiveness of these sanctions is further complicated by the current state of the global oil market, which has already seen a significant supply decrease due to geopolitical tensions.

China, which imports over 80% of Iranian oil, is particularly resistant to US directives. Any sanctions targeting Chinese financial institutions could provoke severe reprisals from Beijing, such as restrictions on the export of critical rare earth elements. Past confrontations over tariffs have shown that China is willing to leverage its economic power, leading to disruptions in industries reliant on these materials.

Chinese officials have voiced their opposition to unilateral sanctions, citing violations of international law and the UN Charter. The US's increasing isolation in multilateral forums has raised alarms among global leaders, prompting many to reconsider their economic ties with the US and explore alternative partnerships.

As countries like Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Pakistan forge new alliances, the reliance on dollar-based trade is waning, and there is a notable shift towards utilizing local currencies and alternative trade agreements. This trend indicates a growing skepticism towards US economic influence.

The current situation echoes historical lessons, as seen in Thucydides' account of the Peloponnesian War, which reminds us that arrogance and overreach can lead to downfall. As the US navigates its position on the global stage, it risks alienating allies and igniting further resistance to its foreign policy.
