Chiikawa Movie Surges Past ¥10 Billion in Box Office Triumph

Chiikawa, the charming character from the hit franchise, has made a significant impact at the Japanese box office, raking in over ¥10 billion (approximately $63 million) just 30 days post-release. The announcement came via the official X account for "Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island," which debuted on July 24.
Directed by Kei Oikawa, the film has captivated audiences, drawing in 7.66 million viewers by August 23. It had a remarkable opening, earning ¥990 million on its first day—marking the seventh-highest first-day gross in Japan's history. Its initial three-day earnings reached ¥2.24 billion.
In response to its success, special theatrical experiences are on the horizon. Starting September 5, the film will be available in the immersive 4DX format, offering audiences a multi-sensory adventure. Additionally, interactive screenings will take place on September 11, allowing fans to cheer for the characters and sing along, breaking traditional movie etiquette. By September 23, glow-stick screenings will further enhance the experience, showcasing Chiikawa's expanding appeal beyond its social media roots.
