Chile Protests Argentine General's Comments on the Strait of Magellan

By Editor • August 25, 2026 • 1 min read

Chile is taking a firm stance against recent comments made by Brigadier General Gustavo Javier Valverde, the head of Argentina's Air Force General Staff, regarding the Strait of Magellan. The Chilean Foreign Ministry announced on Monday that it would formally protest Valverde's statements, which were perceived as an Argentine claim to the crucial maritime passage.

During an interview on the YouTube channel La Fábrica del Podcast, Valverde referred to the Strait of Magellan in the context of sovereignty, emphasizing the need for a military presence in the area. Although he did not explicitly claim sovereignty, his remarks sparked serious concern in Chile, leading officials to assert their nation's indisputable rights over the Strait.

Chilean Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna, speaking from Vietnam, reiterated that Chilean sovereignty is grounded in treaties signed in 1881 and 1984. Interior Minister Claudio Alvarado expressed disbelief at the frequency of such claims, while lawmakers underscored the importance of responding to preserve national integrity. The Strait's significance as a vital shipping route makes this dispute particularly notable.
