Columnist Karen Attiah Wins Reinstatement After Controversial Dismissal

In a surprising turn of events, The Washington Post has been ordered to rehire columnist Karen Attiah, who was dismissed amid allegations of "gross misconduct" following her social media response to the assassination of right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk.
Attiah, who had been with the publication for over a decade, faced termination after expressing a lack of sorrow over Kirk’s death and highlighting his past racist remarks about Black women. Her comments attracted significant backlash, leading the Post to accuse her of violating its social media policies.
On August 24, an arbitrator ruled that the newspaper did not have adequate justification for her firing and mandated her reinstatement along with back pay. Attiah celebrated the ruling on social media, asserting she was removed for "speaking the truth." The Post acknowledged the arbitration process but opted not to comment further.
At the time of her dismissal, Attiah was notably the last Black full-time opinion columnist at the Post. She has been recognized for her advocacy for human rights, having previously edited the late journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was murdered in 2018.
