Conquering the Thrilling Challenge of Mooney Falls

For those with a head for heights, Mooney Falls presents a breathtaking yet daunting adventure. At 200 feet, this waterfall in the Grand Canyon is not only taller than Niagara Falls but also poses significant risks for hikers brave enough to descend its rugged terrain.

Located within the Havasupai Indian Reservation in Arizona, reaching Mooney Falls requires careful planning. The trek begins at the Hualapai Hilltop trailhead, with an 11-mile hike and an advanced permit priced at around $450. Permits typically sell out swiftly when available each February.

During my visit in June 2026, I was captivated by the vibrant turquoise waters that starkly contrasted with the canyon's deep reds. The falls, situated just downstream from Havasu Falls, offer a stunning swimming experience, reminiscent of the South Pacific.

However, the journey down to the water's edge is not for the faint of heart. Hikers must navigate through narrow, hand-carved tunnels followed by slick chains embedded in the rock, all while maintaining three points of contact. The final challenge involves a series of precarious wooden ladders anchored to the cliff face.

While the descent takes about 15 minutes, those with a fear of heights should reconsider, as rescues in this remote area can be treacherous. Past incidents have highlighted the dangers, including drowning and serious injuries.
