Couple's Wedding Turns Sour After Norovirus Outbreak Linked to Reception Meal

A wedding celebration turned into a nightmare for a Brooklyn couple when they, along with numerous guests, fell ill due to a suspected norovirus outbreak linked to their reception meal at The Box House Hotel. The incident, which occurred on November 30, 2024, has led to a lawsuit filed against the venue, claiming negligence in food safety practices.
Michael Ahern and his wife reportedly spent several days bedridden, suffering from severe gastrointestinal distress, after consuming contaminated food at their wedding. Their complaint details experiences of vomiting, diarrhea, chills, and fatigue following the event, which was attended by 112 guests. Alarmingly, over 30 attendees also exhibited similar symptoms, prompting an investigation by the New York City Department of Health.
According to the lawsuit, the couple's symptoms began the day after their wedding, with stool samples confirming the presence of norovirus. Health officials traced the outbreak back to three specific menu items: prosciutto, macaroni-and-cheese croquettes, and a seasonal crumble dessert. The investigation highlighted significant shortcomings in the hotel's food safety protocols, including a lack of hand soap in the kitchen.
A spokesperson for The Box House Hotel expressed regret over the situation, acknowledging the disappointment it brought to the newlyweds. They emphasized the hotel's cooperation with health authorities during the investigation and outlined measures taken to improve sanitation practices. The spokesperson noted that the restaurant passed its subsequent health inspection with an A rating and argued that norovirus was prevalent across New York City at that time, making it difficult to attribute the outbreak solely to their venue.
The hotel’s statement also mentioned that an employee who tested positive for the virus did not report any illness and had no role in preparing the dishes in question. The health department report, however, indicated that the specific source of the outbreak remained undetermined.
In their complaint, the Aherns allege that the hotel failed to ensure food safety and maintain sanitary conditions, leading to a distressing and preventable health crisis on what should have been a joyful occasion. After unsuccessful attempts to settle the matter amicably, the couple has now taken legal action, seeking damages to be determined at trial.
This lawsuit comes amidst a broader concern over foodborne illnesses, particularly in light of a recent cyclospora outbreak linked to Taco Bell's iceberg lettuce.
