Deadly Airstrike Hits Buddhist Monastery in Myanmar, Claims 14 Lives

An airstrike by Myanmar's military on August 21, 2026, targeted a Buddhist monastery, resulting in the deaths of 14 individuals who were participating in a meditation retreat in the Sagaing region. The strike, which occurred around 9 a.m. in Swel Le Oh village, left 20 others injured, according to the Civil Defence and Security Organization of Myaung Township (CDSOM).
The attack involved a fighter jet dropping two bombs within a 15-minute interval, with the second explosion damaging nearby structures. Eyewitnesses reported that over 100 people were present at the monastery for the retreat during the Buddhist Lent.
A local villager, who chose to remain anonymous, confirmed the incident and described the chaos that ensued as residents fled to nearby areas after burying the victims' bodies.
