Elevator Boys' Jacob Rott Takes a Nostalgic Trip in 'Back to the 90s'

Jacob Rott, a member of the Elevator Boys, is ready to bring back the frosted tips of the '90s in a unique homage to the era. The 25-year-old stars in Amazon Prime's new film, "Back to the 90s," where he plays a fictionalized version of himself alongside his musical group.

The film, which premiered in Berlin earlier this week, follows an aspiring boy band that finds themselves transported to 1995 through an elevator, diving deep into the decade's pop culture. "It was obviously one of the most crazy days of my life," Rott shared about the premiere, expressing a whirlwind of emotions as he celebrated with friends, family, and the cast.

The documentary-turned-narrative project stemmed from discussions with Amazon Prime that began three years ago. Rott cites inspirations from iconic boy bands like Backstreet Boys and NSync, as well as One Direction, saying, "The music makes sense, and let’s travel back into the golden era of boy bands and have this adventure rom-com." The film draws parallels to classics like "Spice World" and the boy band parody "2gether."

Rott's character reflects his own pursuit of perfectionism, a theme that resonates throughout the film. He reflects, “If you try to achieve something perfect, then you lose the feelings along the way sometimes.” This insight prompted him to reconsider his own approach to creativity.

"Back to the 90s" marks the Elevator Boys' acting debut, filmed over three months and culminating in an elaborate choreographed scene. Collaborating with Gary Barlow from the '90s pop group Take That, they recorded the film's title track, "1995." Rott acknowledges the skepticism surrounding their transition from social media stars to actors but hopes viewers will embrace this new chapter.

The group embraced a '90s aesthetic for their premiere, with Rott donning a vintage sporty-tech Prada jacket. As he continues to explore various creative outlets, from music to acting, Rott remains committed to producing work that stirs emotions.
