Empowering Change: Youth Lead the Charge in Johannesburg's Urban Revival

In the heart of Johannesburg, a wave of youthful enthusiasm is driving the city’s inner-city revitalization. Melusi Khumalo, a 26-year-old student leader and head of the Jozi My Jozi movement’s student chapter, is at the forefront of this initiative. With aspirations to influence government policy, Khumalo embodies the potential of the city’s youth, whom he describes as its "new gold."

Khumalo’s journey began at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), where he earned a BA in public management and governance and is currently pursuing honors in public policy. His commitment to youth engagement led him to represent student voices in national forums aimed at fostering social change.

His involvement with Jozi My Jozi was sparked during a significant clean-up event at Ellis Park, where he mobilized fellow students to prepare for the 2024 Rugby Championship. This initiative not only beautified the area but also deepened his connection to the movement, especially after discovering his brother’s pledge to the city on Jozi My Jozi’s website.

Under Khumalo’s leadership, over 3,000 students from UJ and other institutions have participated in various community projects, including clean-ups and the city’s first count of homelessness. He is also spearheading efforts to revitalize Annet Road, aiming to create a safer, more welcoming environment that fosters collaboration between universities and local communities.

For Khumalo, this work is more than just a responsibility; it’s a passion. "Everything I’m doing aligns with Jozi My Jozi, and that’s where the love comes from," he says. "Together, we can build a brighter future for Jozi, one step at a time."
