The ongoing conflict in West Asia intensified as U.S. forces conducted airstrikes on Iranian positions in the Strait of Hormuz on August 30, marking the first American military action against Iran in a month. The targeted strikes hit two rocket launchers on Larak Island, leading Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps to report casualties.
In retaliation, Iran targeted U.S. military facilities in Jordan with ballistic missiles, claiming to have inflicted heavy damage on key infrastructure at the King Hussein and Al-Azraq airbases. Jordan’s army reported intercepting eight missiles that entered its airspace during the early hours of August 31, 2026.
This spike in hostilities has had immediate economic repercussions, with oil prices rising by over $1 a barrel amid fears of escalating conflict. Brent crude futures reached $89.18 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate rose to $84.32.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that further sanctions targeting Iranian financial institutions are imminent, with a focus on banks. Bessent emphasized the need to restrict Iranian financial activities, stating, "We’re starting with the banks, and we’re telling the banks it’s not okay to have Iranian money and to aid the regime." He also hinted at more punitive measures to come, particularly against banks associated with Iran.
