Filmmakers Kevin Walker and Jack Auen, collectively known as Cosmic Salon, are set to mesmerize audiences with their debut feature film, Chronovisor. This unique docufiction, which premiered at the Rotterdam Film Festival earlier this year, blends historical inquiry with a thrilling narrative that delves into Vatican conspiracies.
At the heart of the film is Béatrice, portrayed by Anne-Laure Sellier, a dedicated academic who becomes engrossed in the legend of the Chronovisor, a supposed device once owned by Vatican officials that can reveal images from the past, including significant events like the crucifixion of Jesus. Much of the film's action is presented through Béatrice's exploration of historical texts, giving it a layered, cerebral quality.
Described as an existential thriller, Chronovisor oscillates between a literary detective story and an unsettling visual experience, showcasing the filmmakers' commitment to an immersive narrative style. The film is not just a visual treat but a complex discourse on the nature of memory and historical representation, featuring an array of fonts and archival materials that enhance its aesthetic.
In conjunction with its release, Film at Lincoln Center will host a special film series titled “Bibliomania: A Preface to Chronovisor,” running from August 28 to September 5, featuring classics that celebrate the art of reading and research.
Chronovisor opens at Film at Lincoln Center on September 4, with a broader rollout to follow, promising to captivate audiences with its blend of education and intrigue.
