Family Devastated by E-Bike Battery Fire in Murwillumbah

A family in Murwillumbah has suffered devastating losses after a fire, sparked by an e-bike lithium battery, engulfed their home and business early Wednesday morning. The blaze, which took firefighters nearly three hours to control, destroyed the Parkhill family's residence and their e-bike venture, Valley E-bike.

Owner Mick Parkhill recounted the frightening moments leading up to the inferno, which erupted around 3:00 AM. Initially thinking someone was breaking into their home, he was shocked to discover flames and thick smoke filling the space. Despite his desperate attempts to extinguish the fire with a blanket, he and his family were forced to flee. Tragically, they lost their two dogs in the chaos.

Mr. Parkhill estimates the financial toll at around $500,000 due to the destruction of approximately 70 e-bikes, a loss compounded by the fact that the family had recently renovated their home following the 2022 floods. He acknowledged his awareness of the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries but inadvertently neglected to store them properly, attributing the oversight to fatigue from prior work.

As investigations continue, NSW Fire and Rescue's Northern Rivers Inspector Tim Climo emphasized the challenges faced when combating fires fueled by lithium batteries, urging the public to take precautions when charging these devices. He recommended charging e-bike batteries in separate structures away from the main house and ensuring a smoke detector is installed where charging occurs.
