Flock Safety CEO Advocates for Balance Amid Rising Scrutiny

Garrett Langley, CEO of Flock Safety, is emphasizing the need for a balanced approach between privacy rights and public safety amid increasing criticism of his company’s surveillance technology. In a recent interview with Fox News, Langley stated, "When people talk about just one of these, privacy or safety, they’re prioritizing the wrong thing… what we have to prioritize as a country is compromise."

This call for compromise comes as Flock faces mounting backlash over allegations that its surveillance systems—including cameras and license plate recognition technology—have been misused. The Washington Post reported 46 instances where police allegedly exploited Flock's tools for personal gain, including stalking.

In response to public outcry, Langley expressed remorse for the victims, stating, "I apologize. It kills me that she went through that," while defending his company by asserting that Flock is the first to highlight these issues and provide tools for accountability. Nevertheless, the call for reform is echoed across the political spectrum, with both Democratic and Republican lawmakers criticizing Flock's operations.

Recent statements from politicians like Michigan’s Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders reflect this bipartisan concern. On the Republican side, three House Republicans have introduced legislation to restrict the federal government from acquiring surveillance technologies that include Flock cameras.

In light of the criticism, Flock has implemented changes such as reducing data retention from 30 days to 7 days, though these adjustments can be overridden under certain conditions. The American Civil Liberties Union has remarked that while these changes may seem positive, their effectiveness remains uncertain.
