Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Urges Elections Amidst Crisis

Mykhailo Fedorov, the former Ukrainian defense minister, has called for wartime elections, presenting a significant challenge to President Volodymyr Zelensky amid ongoing conflict with Russia. In a YouTube video released on Tuesday, Fedorov asserted, "Democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia," emphasizing Ukraine's desire to uphold its status as a free European nation.
Since the onset of the war in February 2022, Ukraine has been under martial law, suspending elections. Fedorov, who was abruptly dismissed from his defense minister role in July, did not directly reference Zelensky in his address but expressed concerns about a “systemic crisis of governance” in Ukraine.
His ousting led to public protests, reflecting dissatisfaction with the current administration. Fedorov previously garnered attention for combatting corruption and enhancing military performance during his tenure. Following his removal, he declined other governmental positions offered by Zelensky, insisting he would only return as defense minister.
As the country grapples with leadership challenges, Zelensky has appointed Yevgeniy Khmara as the acting defense minister, further complicating the political landscape.
