Copenhagen Fashion Week’s S/S 2027 edition saw a refreshing departure from the typical street style showcased, thanks to Galib Gassanoff’s latest collection. Held at the Statens Museum for Kunst, the runway was an exquisite display, adorned with antique Caucasian carpets that served as a backdrop for his artistic creations.
Gassanoff, a semi-finalist for the 2026 LVMH Prize and winner of the Zalando Visionary Award 2026, emphasized that his work transcends fashion, focusing instead on culture, craftsmanship, and ethnography. ‘It’s not a fashion brand, it’s a roof,’ he explained, highlighting his desire to amplify stories from various communities, particularly those in his native region.
Originating from a small village near Tbilisi, Georgia, Gassanoff’s early fascination with folklore and clothing laid the groundwork for his artistic journey. His pivotal moment came at the age of 13 when he stumbled upon John Galliano’s theatrical designs for Dior, igniting his passion for merging music, visual art, and culture through fashion.
After moving to Milan at 18 for fashion studies, he learned traditional artisanal techniques that are becoming rare in today’s industrialized fashion landscape. His collection featured Azerbaijani hand-knitted ‘jorab’ socks and silk chiffon robes adorned with ‘Tetri’ coins, symbolizing freedom and democracy. These pieces serve not just as clothing but as collectible art, blurring the lines between textile and artistry.
Gassanoff’s work resonates with a deep connection to his heritage while exploring the contrasts of village life and urban existence. ‘Scandinavia couldn’t be an inspiration because I don’t live here,’ he noted, indicating that his memories of the experience would linger like a dream, a testament to his rich cultural narrative.
