Gamma Expands Horizons with Acquisition of Design Startup Lica

Gamma, a presentation startup, has taken a significant step forward by acquiring Lica, a design firm backed by Accel. This strategic move aims to establish Gamma's own design research lab, with Lica's co-founders at the helm.

Founded in 2023 by Priyaa Kalyanaraman and Purvanshi Mehta, Lica initially developed an app to transform screenshots and recordings into engaging project presentations. Within just a year, the startup garnered $4 million in funding from notable investors, including Accel, South Park Commons, and Village Global, focusing on creating marketing videos for e-commerce platforms.

Kalyanaraman expressed that Lica's vision aligns closely with Gamma's approach to enhancing visual communication, emphasizing the importance of accessibility in design research. As both companies share support from Accel and South Park Commons, discussions about collaboration naturally progressed to an acquisition.

Gamma plans to maintain its focus on presentation tools while looking to innovate in image generation and explore diverse communication formats through the new research division. CEO Lee Grant highlighted the need to rethink the nature of presentations and how audiences interact with them, aiming to push the boundaries of visual communication.

Mehta noted that the research division will tailor AI models for varying presentation styles and audience preferences, with the goal of achieving a more personalized output. While specific future products remain undisclosed, Gamma is committed to developing fluid, multimodal presentations that cater to evolving communication needs.
