Gen Z Ditches Dating Apps for Hobby-Based Connections

By Editor • August 17, 2026 • 1 min read

In a surprising twist, Gen Z is turning away from digital dating and opting for real-life encounters through hobby-centric events, according to a new study from Eventbrite.

The report highlights a staggering 403% increase in trivia night events, with significant interest in cities like Chicago, Boston, and Raleigh. Other niche gatherings, such as Mahjong meetups and birdwatching excursions, are also gaining traction, reflecting a shift in how young people approach romance.

Andrea Parodi, Eventbrite's general manager, noted that the lines between dating and hobbies are blurring, with individuals seeking connections through shared interests. “People are starting with what they already love or exploring new pastimes,” she stated.

This shift comes amid growing disillusionment with dating apps, where 65% of downloads in 2024 were deleted within a month. A recent study showed that 77% of Gen Zers prefer meeting partners in person. With the rise of 'grannycore' hobbies like knitting and gardening, young singles are finding love in unexpected places, from run clubs to trivia nights.
