General Mills Ditches Synthetic Colors Across U.S. Cereal Lineup

In a significant shift, General Mills has announced that its entire range of cereals sold in the United States will no longer contain synthetic food dyes. This change affects popular products like Trix and Lucky Charms, which previously included certified colors such as Red 40.
The removal of these petroleum-based additives, approved by the FDA, comes amid growing concerns about their potential health risks, including links to DNA damage and cancer. While the company has yet to disclose the new ingredients replacing these dyes, they assure consumers that the taste and quality of their cereals will remain intact.
Earlier this year, the company began offering K-12 food products free of synthetic colors, with plans to eliminate such additives from other items, including fruit snacks and baking mixes, by the end of 2027. Future releases will also focus on health-forward products, emphasizing fiber and protein.
