Germany's Record-Setting Grape Harvest Begins Early Amid Heatwave

Germany's grape harvest has kicked off earlier than any previous year, a result of the scorching summer that has rapidly ripened the vineyards, according to the German Wine Institute.

Spokesman Ernst Büscher noted that the harvest, which began in September, marks a continuation of a trend over the last few decades where rising temperatures have influenced grape maturation, impacting both sugar and acidity levels. "This was the earliest start to the harvest ever in all wine-growing regions," he stated, hinting that some growers even cut vacations short to accommodate the early picking.

The initial phase of the harvest is already in progress across various regions, from Saxony to Lake Constance, with grapes for both sparkling and premium wines being collected. The main harvesting surge is anticipated to occur within the first week of September.

While growers are pleased with the initial quality of the grapes, they are also wary of the potential challenges posed by climate change, which could impact the balance of sugar and acidity. Overall, the harvest is expected to be below average due to smaller grape sizes resulting from the dry conditions.
