NHS Hospitals Struggle Amid Summer Heatwave: Urgent Action Needed

By Editor • August 15, 2026 • 1 min read

This summer, NHS hospitals across England are facing unprecedented challenges as record-breaking heat turns wards into unsafe environments. With temperatures soaring to nearly 42°C, hospitals are being forced to cancel surgeries due to malfunctioning cooling systems in operating theatres.

Data from 33 NHS trusts, disclosed under freedom of information laws, reveals that the average temperature on hospital wards reached 31.9°C in July, significantly exceeding the NHS England recommended limit of 28°C for patient safety. The Northern Care Alliance NHS foundation trust in Greater Manchester reported a staggering 41.8°C, a full 14 degrees above the safety threshold.

The Liberal Democrats, who released the concerning figures, are calling for the establishment of an “NHS rapid adaptation unit” to implement urgent cooling solutions in hospitals and care homes. Health spokesperson Helen Morgan emphasized the need for mandatory air conditioning in care facilities and upgrades to existing NHS buildings to withstand future heatwaves.

The extreme heat has not only disrupted surgical schedules, but it has also led to patients cancelling their own procedures due to the unbearable conditions. Additionally, ambulance services are struggling to maintain appropriate temperatures for medications during transport. In response, NHS trusts have begun hiring air conditioning units, with at least one trust renting 600 units to mitigate the heat.

As the heatwave continues, there are growing concerns for the health of both patients and staff, with reports of nurses fainting. David Williams, deputy director of policy for the NHS Alliance, highlights the urgent need for investment in the aging NHS infrastructure to prevent such crises in the future.
