High Costs of Weight-Loss Drugs Create Financial Strain for Users

By Editor • August 15, 2026 • 1 min read

The escalating prices of weight-loss medications, particularly GLP-1s, have raised concerns about their accessibility, effectively creating a financial barrier that disproportionately affects lower-income individuals. According to a recent analysis by consultancy firm Baringa, individuals need to have nearly £100,000 in discretionary income annually to truly benefit from any savings on grocery expenses after spending approximately £1,200 on these drugs.

“GLP-1s risk becoming a driver of inequality,” warns Paddy Winters, a partner at Baringa. The analysis reveals that while those with around £39,000 in disposable income could save approximately £481 on food costs per year, only those earning £97,500 or more would see a grocery expense reduction matching the cost of the medication.

Winters highlights that for the majority of users, the financial burden of GLP-1s outweighs any potential savings, especially as many users also incur additional costs for vitamin supplements and personal care products to manage side effects. This scenario leads to what he describes as a “regressive tax on being thin.”

The implications are significant as 14.3 million adults in England live with obesity, and the government is urged to ensure equitable access to weight-loss medications. Currently, about 5% of adults in Britain are prescribed weight-loss drugs, a number projected to grow to 13% by next year.

Dr. Leyla Hannbeck, chair of the Independent Pharmacies Association, emphasizes that while NHS access is limited to a small eligible group, many potential beneficiaries are priced out of treatment. Price fluctuations in the market have been noted, yet competition is increasing, with new products like the Wegovy pill emerging. However, the cycle of starting and stopping treatment due to cost may lead to weight regain, underscoring the need for comprehensive lifestyle changes alongside any medical intervention.
