Hong Kong Bookstore Closes After National Security Raid, Customers Flock on Final Day

By Editor • August 30, 2026 • 1 min read

In a poignant farewell, the independent bookstore 'Have a Nice Stay' in Hong Kong welcomed an outpouring of support from customers on its last day of operation. This comes just six weeks after a national security police raid forced the beloved shop to close its doors.

On Sunday afternoon, readers lined up outside the third-floor store located in a Prince Edward tenement building, with some waiting as long as 45 minutes to gain entry. The atmosphere was one of both nostalgia and urgency, as patrons sought to show their support for the four-year-old establishment.

The bookstore's abrupt closure followed a police operation in mid-July, during which national security officers also targeted the neighboring Greenfield bookstore, raising concerns about freedom of expression in the region.
