Indonesian Authorities Crack Down on Forest Fire Suspects Amid Choking Haze

By Editor • August 23, 2026 • 1 min read

In a decisive move against rampant forest fires in Indonesia, police arrested 72 individuals on August 23, 2026, suspected of igniting recent blazes that have led to a hazardous haze affecting air quality across the region. The arrests come as the country grapples with intense fires exacerbated by the ongoing El Niño phenomenon and prolonged dry conditions.

The suspects are linked to 89 cases of forest and land fires across several provinces, including both Borneo and Sumatra. According to Mohammad Irhamni, director of special crimes at the National Police's Criminal Investigation Agency, many of those arrested are accused of deliberately setting fires to clear land for agricultural purposes, often at a lower expense.

President Prabowo Subianto visited Central Kalimantan on August 22 to oversee fire containment efforts, pledging essential resources like helicopters and water pumps to combat the blazes. He emphasized accountability for companies associated with the fires, stating, "I hope we can control this soon," referencing Indonesia's past experiences with similar crises.

As the situation worsens, with over 7,600 hectares burned, investigations are also focusing on four companies in West Kalimantan that may have used fire to clear land. If found guilty of intentional arson, these companies could face severe penalties, including the revocation of their operating licenses.

Smoke from the fires has created hazardous conditions not just in Indonesia but also in neighboring Malaysia, where nearly 600 schools were closed due to unhealthy air quality. The Sarawak government reported that some areas recorded very unhealthy levels of pollution, affecting around 200,000 students.

With fire activity rising in key regions, authorities are employing cloud-seeding methods and deploying helicopters for water-bombing missions to mitigate the impact of the fires and restore air quality.
