Innovative Bamboo Roof Design Wins Kaira Looro Architecture Competition

A striking bamboo roof design capturing both community spirit and environmental sustainability has clinched first place in the 2026 Kaira Looro Architecture Competition. Created by architects Afroditi Ioannidou and Vladimir Gligorovski of K-Studio, the proposal reimagines traditional Senegalese housing, drawing inspiration from the impluvium houses of the Casamance region.

This winning design envisions a community center that expands the intimate courtyard concept of homes into a larger village framework, constructed primarily from rammed-earth materials. The competition, organized by the humanitarian nonprofit Balouo Salo, challenged architects to develop a communal space suitable for rural southern Senegal, emphasizing local construction techniques and materials.

The proposed center features a distinctive elongated structure with a gently curving bamboo roof that facilitates passive ventilation and provides ample shade. The layout includes a library, study area, and service spaces, all oriented toward a central gathering area that serves as a venue for meetings and community events. This architectural arrangement fosters interaction while ensuring that the center can adapt to various uses throughout the day.

Notably, the construction methods suggested by Ioannidou and Gligorovski prioritize simplicity and local participation. Bamboo is utilized in the framework, joined with rope and wire, while laterite soil is fashioned into rammed-earth walls. Small openings in these walls allow natural light and air to flow through, promoting a comfortable environment.

The design also addresses water management, directing rainwater from the expansive roof to handwashing stations and allowing it to seep into the ground through a gravel area, reflecting the traditional inward focus of Senegalese architecture.

Alongside the first-prize winner, the competition recognized second place for a proposal by Marta Kuczynska and Jakub Czak from Poland, and third place for a Colombian team that designed a partially excavated structure. Each entry highlighted the importance of shade and community involvement in construction.
