Innovative Rope Stool Redefines Furniture Design
By Editor • August 28, 2026 • 1 min read
In a groundbreaking departure from conventional furniture construction, the Rope Stool eliminates the need for screws and adhesives, relying solely on the tension of rope to hold together its components. This unique piece emerged from a creative collaboration between artisans from Tottori, Japan, and designers from Gothenburg, Sweden, facilitated by Oshinsha, a Japanese retailer.
The design challenge was clear: create a functional piece of furniture using identical flat cedar boards, which led to the development of this portable stool. Made entirely from Japanese cedar, known for its lightweight and durability, the stool exemplifies simplicity and efficiency.
When tightened, the rope provides the necessary rigidity for seating, while allowing the stool to be easily disassembled into a flat bundle for transport. This makes it ideal for various settings, whether at markets, workshops, or outdoor events.
Designed by Esbjorn Grip and Junsei Fujimoto, the Rope Stool not only serves as a functional seat but also showcases a design philosophy that values transparency and clarity in construction, challenging traditional notions of furniture assembly.
