Instagram Introduces 'First Draft' to Streamline Reels Editing

Instagram is revolutionizing the Reels editing process with a new feature called "First Draft," announced on Tuesday via a Threads post. This tool is designed to alleviate the tedious task of manually editing video clips, allowing creators to produce an initial cut in under 10 seconds.

The First Draft feature automatically trims selected clips and eliminates pauses, making video creation more accessible, especially for those lacking extensive editing experience. Users can access this functionality directly from the Instagram camera or the Reels gallery after selecting multiple clips.

While automated editing isn't entirely new, with similar features found in tools like Adobe Firefly’s Quick Cuts and CapCut’s Auto Cut, Instagram's integration into its platform encourages creators to keep their editing streamlined without moving to separate software. This year, Instagram has also unveiled tools like the “Replace Audio” feature and is exploring new functionalities such as “Series” for grouping related Reels.

This announcement coincided with Instagram head Adam Mosseri’s expected testimony in Meta’s ongoing social media addiction trial, where the company faces allegations of fostering compulsive use among children.
