By Editor • August 25, 2026 • 1 min read

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi emphasized Japan's serious stance regarding the U.S. sanctions against Tomoko Akane, President of the International Criminal Court (ICC). After facing criticism from domestic lawmakers, Takaichi asserted that Japan’s reaction to the sanctions is not weak.

Japan previously urged the U.S. to reconsider its decision, which Takaichi described as 'very unfortunate.' She expressed solidarity with Akane, pledging continued support.

Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi confirmed that Japan is maintaining close communication with Akane and reiterated the nation's commitment to supporting the ICC as its largest financial contributor.
