Japan's 'Beauty Sleep' Treatments Under Fire for Risky Practices

By Editor • August 24, 2026 • 1 min read

In Japan, the rise of private 'beauty sleep' treatments has ignited a debate over the use of psychotropic drugs in cosmetic practices. Clinics are advertising these treatments on social media, prescribing potentially addictive medications without a clear medical basis.

While 'beauty sleep' suggests that quality sleep is essential for healthy skin, experts warn that the trend may lead to inappropriate use of prescription drugs. These treatments, which have gained popularity in the past year, are not covered by public health insurance, placing an extra financial burden on patients.

Naohisa Uchimura, President of Kurume University and the Japanese Society of Sleep Research, emphasizes that sleeping pills should primarily be used for insomnia. He cautions against their casual use for beauty purposes, highlighting the risks of dependence and side effects such as drowsiness.
